Who we are
Founded in September 1988 by eight students who found no PSA on campus and started one, PSA is dedicated to spreading awareness of Pakistani culture at the U. Our purpose is to bring the Pakistani community together and create a home away from home for Pakistani students — collaborating with other organizations, hosting cultural events, and showcasing our culture across the U.
Objective 01
Two to three major cultural events every semester, open to all UM students — Eid celebrations, mock shaadis, general body nights.
Objective 02
Smaller community events designed to build a genuine support network for Pakistani students across campus — ice cream on the green, game nights, chai and complaints.
Objective 03
Fundraisers for charitable causes back home, with education as the standing priority. The President works directly with the charity partners.

The road so far
The founding years come to us from the founders themselves: Dr Jamil Yusuf, PSA’s first Vice President, wrote to the board in September 2026 after a friend found our Instagram. Everything from 2019 on is in UM’s Engage archive. The 2026–27 season starts at the bottom.
1988–1993 — The founding years
University of Miami · eight to ten Pakistani students on the whole campus
Dr Jamil Yusuf arrived in August 1988 for his MS and PhD, asked about a Pakistani association in his first meeting with other Pakistani students, and was told there wasn’t one. So they started it. Dr Labeed Kazi was elected the first President, Dr Jamil Yusuf Vice President, and Ebrahim Ayoob Secretary and Treasurer. Within a couple of months COISO named PSA its most active organization.
Council of International Students and Organizations
Dr Jamil Yusuf became President in 1989 and PSA ran its own member, Abdul Razzak, for COISO Vice President — and won. In 1990 PSA took both the COISO President and Vice President seats, by a margin of 400 votes, from a club of fewer than twenty.

Campus stalls, community dinners, MSO collaborations
PSA campaigned for Pakistan, Kashmir, Bosnia and Palestine, worked closely with the Muslim Students Organization, and brought the local Pakistani community onto campus. When the founders graduated in 1993 the eight had become more than thirty. The founding team still meets — a dozen of them gathered in Karachi in December 2024.

Promoting the cultural diversity of Pakistan through local food, games and chats. Open to everyone at UM — a blend of traditional and western games.

A leap-day GBM — the reset that rebuilt the board and the calendar.
Shalala Grand Ballroom
Food, guest speakers and activities for the Eid holiday. Cultural and formal attire, open to all — a full ballroom for Eid.

The first GBM of the year: meet fellow members, play a night of Tambola, and hear the whole slate of events being planned. Three hours, green and white throughout.
The Rathskeller · 1330 Miller Drive
Four and a half hours of mock-wedding chaos to send the seniors off — dinner, dancing, and senior shoutouts. The biggest night PSA has thrown.
2026–27 season
Senate Room · Shalala Student Center
The year’s kickoff: new freshmen, the new board, the whole 2026–27 slate — and a round of Jeopardy to settle who actually knows their Pakistan trivia.

A live qawwali ensemble, mehfil-style floor seating on rugs and cushions, a make-your-own Kashmiri chai station, and lanterns everywhere. PSA’s fall flagship.
Spring 2027 — planned
Shalala · Intramural Fields · Grand Ballroom
A spring general body meeting in late January, cricket on the IM fields, the Eid celebration paired with Basant kite flying in late March, and a senior send-off game night in April. Dates land on Engage as they’re booked.
What a PSA night looks like
Tambola tickets at the Spring GBM; Ludo Star tournaments when campus was shut. The board games are non-negotiable.
